FilAm ARTS traces its roots to the production of the Annual Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture (FPAC) first conceptualized in 1990 as part of the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department’s Festivals Program, an arts program designed to address the multicultural constituency of the city.

Today, FPAC is the largest presenter of Philippine arts and culture in Southern California presenting over 1200 artists in 9 disciplines and attracting over 20,000 audience members from all over the country. Yet, after 15 years, FPAC is still a grassroots and community-led effort, produced by a core group of 50 volunteer professionals, in collaboration with 50 community-based and civic organizations, and involving over 300 volunteers.

Relive the spirit of cheering against your cross town rival and come out to play for (or just cheer on) UCLA APA vs. USC APAA.

Location: Arcadia County Park at the corner of Huntington Drive and Santa Anita Avenue. We are at softball field #1

The morning will kick off with the softball game - we'll be playing co-ed rules so both boys and girls are welcomed to come out. We'll have trophy presentation and lunch following the game.

The cost is $15 - this fee includes lunch and refreshments.

Priority playing time will be given to those who attend practice.

Save the date for the 67th Nisei Week Japanese Festival, being held from August 18-25, 2007 in Little Tokyo and Long Beach (Nikkei Games). The 2007 Nisei Week Festival will be held one week later than usual to accommodate the Aomori Nebuta Festival float, which is coming to Los Angeles for the first time to participate in the Nisei Week Grand Parade on August 19, which is also starting later at 6 p.m.

Did you know that 80% of the trash you see on our coast and oceans does NOT come from beach goers, but travels our storm drain channels from as far away as 60 miles before landing on our sand and surf? You can play an important part in the ongoing fight to keep our beaches clean and safe for people, sea life and birds, and the ocean itself. Please join Heal the Bay to help reduce pollution on our beaches on Coastal Cleanup Day: Saturday, September 16, 2006, at Venice Beach at Rose Avenue, from 9:00 am to noon! Your efforts to pick up litter help create a safer environment for beachgoers and coastal creatures. Plus, you'll get great exercise walking the beach with other UCLA Asian Pacific Alumni!! The Norton Simon Museum’s collection of South Asian art provides a comprehensive view of the religious and artistic landscapes encountered by aspiring conquerors of India in the late 12th century. In this lecture, independent scholar Alka Patel discusses how these newcomers from the isolated highlands of Afghanistan were little prepared for the rich iconographies of India, the birthplace of Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism.

5) Hammer Conversations: Yoshihiro Tatsumi & Adrian Tomine
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Legendary Japanese comic artist and manga-ka (“manga expert”) Yoshihiro Tatsumi is credited for establishing gekiga (“dramatic pictures”), a style of alternative comics that blends drama and art in a realistic fashion for an adult audience.

A pioneer of the graphic novel, Tatsumi has been drawing comics since the 1950s. His works have been rarely available for American audiences until his most recent collection, The Push Man and Other Stories, edited by Tomine, was published last September.

Comic artist and graphic novelist Adrian Tomine has published many comic books, which include 32 Stories: The Complete Optic Nerve Mini-Comics, She Read the Letter Journal, and the critically acclaimed Summer Blonde. In addition to being featured on many album covers, his works have been included in The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and Time.

The LA Tofu Festival is a fundraiser for the Little Tokyo Service Center, a non-profit community-based organization, which has been providing services to low income, immigrant, homeless and distressed seniors and families for over 25 years. Programs include assistance to victims of domestic violence, support groups, child abuse and neglect outreach, emergency food and shelter assistance, affordable housing, and community redevelopment. 9) 66th Annual Nissei Week Japanese Festival

The 66th Nisei Week Japanese Festival will be held from August 12-20, 2006 in Los Angeles' Little Tokyo district with many fun-filled, family friendly events. Nisei Week has arranged with the City of Los Angeles to have plenty of public parking in and around the Little Tokyo area. Nisei Week will be held in conjunction with the Tofu Festival the first weekend, August 12-13. This year, leading up to the festival this summer, the Nisei Week Hoops Tournament (June 23-25), Nisei Week Fashion Show (June 10), and Nisei Week Baby Show (July 22) will be held.

The Nisei Week Fashion Show, which will benefit both Nisei Week and Keiro Senior Healthcare, is back this year and will be held June 10 at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Hey, hello to all of you APA-UCLA Bruins. How about the great finish for the UCLA basketball team making it all the way to the NCAA Championship game! Thanks and congratulations to Coach Ben Howland and his staff for his superb job of coaching the Bruins and a “high five” to all the players who really played as a unit and played great team defense. GOOO BRUINS!!

For those of you who like to attend and support our Bruin athletic teams, APA-UCLA has recently formed as a subcommittee the APA-UCLA Bruin Booster Club, Chaired by Kenney Mah. The Booster Club had its initial meeting in December 2005 and it featured Ernie Ziegler UCLA Basketball assistant coach with players Josh Shipp and Kelvin Kim also attending and speaking to us re the progress of the team.

At APA-UCLA’s Student Career Networking Conference on January 23, 2006, approximately 175 students attended and interfaced with APA-UCLA alum members and other professionals who gave advice and mentored the students re their various career opportunities. We also commenced with this momentum the APA-UCLA Student Committee where current UCLA students can join our alumni chapter and network with other students and alums about career opportunities and campus issues that concern them. APA-UCLA hopes to support the students in their campus concerns and their need to interface with alums about their careers.

Please set aside the date of MAY 12, 2006 at the West Center for our APA-UCLA Student Scholarship Fundraiser. Save up your money so we can give to support some of our fine students who are academically successful, show a genuine interest in the welfare of the APA community, and are in financial need. As you are aware the costs associated with student fees have greatly escalated in recent years and students need help. We can help by raising funds through these fundraisers and it should be an enjoyable event.

APA-UCLA prides itself in providing a friendly, personal, and comfortable way that APA-UCLA alums can “return to our campus” and show support for our alma mater and give back to our current students, the faculty and staff at UCLA.

EXCELLENCE IN COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP

PURPOSE: In 1999, the Asian Pacific Alumni Association of UCLA (APA-UCLA) established the Excellence in Community Service Scholarship to support and honor current UCLA undergraduate students for their commitment in addressing a significant community issue. APA- UCLA realizes the successful development of the Asian Pacific Islander Community is built on the efforts of those who dedicate themselves to advancing thoughtful solutions to critical needs in the community. By acknowledging students for their efforts on behalf of the community, APA-UCLA hopes to foster the spirit of service and to nurture emerging leaders.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE: Undergraduates who are enrolled as full-time, continuing students at UCLA. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0. While the scholarship is open to all students, APA-UCLA strongly encourages students from historically under-represented Asian Pacific American groups to apply.

AWARD: The number of awards varies; award amount is $1,500.00.

REQUIREMENTS: A student enrolled as a full-time undergraduate at UCLA, not in the process of graduating, who demonstrates a commitment to addressing a critical issue in the advancement of the Asian Pacific Islander Community.

Applicants must:

§ Complete an application form and essay
§ Provide a copy of current university transcript
§ Provide a letter of recommendation

SELECTION PROCESS: The APA-UCLA Scholarship Committee will review all applications. Finalists will be invited to an interview; business attire recommended. A Board member will present award recipient with the scholarship at an APA-UCLA event.

APIA U: Leadership 101 Training is designed to give Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) college students the chance to engage in an interactive college leadership training program which will involve hands-on exercises, small group discussions, and presentations led by two qualified APIA facilitators.

- 60 APIA students from each region
- Focus on Self-Awareness, team-building, and direct action organizing.
- Development of leadership tools to effectively serve as catalysts for change.
- Attendees will have the opportunity to network with local APIA community leaders

5) Asian Excellence Awards (AXA) - 1/19/06

The 2006 Asian Excellence Awards comes to Hollywood via New York where for the past four years, New York-based theater company Second Generation has produced an earlier incarnation of the award show under the name the "Concert of Excellence" with Remy Martin as the corporate sponsor. This annual event has sold-out Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and has gained tremendous recognition throughout the Asian American community.

CREATION OF THE APA-UCLA BRUIN BOOSTER CLUB

MIKE FONG, President of the Asian Pacific Alumni of UCLA (APA-UCLA) : as you know APA-UCLA is an official chapter of the UCLA Alumni Association and provides a vehicle for our thousands of Asian Pacific American(APA) alums to participate in support of their alma mater in a more intimate, comfortable and personal way.

APA-UCLA has tried to serve its members through networking opportunities, professional development, APA community involvement and to show our support of UCLA in general and the APA professors, staff and students on campus.

The APA-UCLA Booster Club is an effort to create a subcommittee of our organization to reach out to the many APA alums that support our athletic programs, like, basketball, football, and other sports. I have appointed one of our members: Kenney Mah to chair this new committee.

KENNEY MAH: as Mike said APA-UCLA in creating the Booster Club is reaching out to our current members and new members who are interested in participating in enjoyable events like tailgating, receptions for guest speakers (coaches and players) and some fundraising efforts to support the athletic programs.

What: The Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles is taking applications for the 2006 Miss Los Angeles Chinatown Pageant to be held on January 21, 2006 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel, Los Angeles.

The Miss Los Angeles Chinatown Queen and Court have the opportunity to be “ambassadors of goodwill” for the Greater Los Angeles Chinese American community. It is an experience that focuses on educating participants in areas of Chinese culture/history, leadership, service, as well as personal development in presentation, poise, confidence, and public speaking. No pageant experience is required; we offer training for all contestants during our rehearsals.

If there’s one thing attendees flocking to experience the annual Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture (FPAC) can expect, it’s a mix -- a mix of tastes, languages and generations. Featuring a trademark blend of contemporary and traditional artists, FPAC is one of the most dynamically programmed cultural events in the nation. The 14th edition of this popular community-wide tradition, the largest of its kind in Southern California, takes place September 10 and 11 at breathtaking Point Fermin, 807 Paseo Del Mar in San Pedro. 5) Statewide Dialogue on API Youth Violence
---------------------------------------------------------
Throughout California, Asian and Pacific Islander (API) youth are both the victims and the perpetrators of violence representing conflict within the group and attacks from the outside. What is clear about the incidents is that although occurring throughout the state, they could be happening in our own neighborhoods.

The goals of the Statewide Dialogue on API Youth Violence are to identify the needs of youth and their families, understand law enforcement responses, voice the concerns of community members, and begin examining approaches that can stop the violence.

4) UCLA UniCamp: Help Send A Kid to Camp

UCLA UniCamp has been the official student charity since 1934 and this year we are expanding to UCSB also. Since its establishment, we have provided aid to 60,000 children from families below the federal poverty line that are living in Los Angeles. We specifically target children between the ages of 10 to 17 years old because they are easily influenced during this stage of their development. To prevent them from taking the wrong path, we step in and encourage them to take the path leading to a brighter future and eventually higher education. Each summer, we take the children out of the city and put them under the stars at Camp River Glen in the San Bernardino National Forest. While at camp, we instill self-esteem, promote the value of education, increase cultural awareness and provide positive role models. Our goals are accomplished by programming activities that allow the campers to take home memories and lessons. At UniCamp, we build a sense of community between the students and the underserved youth; it is a relationship that would not develop without the existence of our organization. By maintaining the rapport through our year-round Mentorship program, we hope to make a greater impact on the lives of these children. The experience with UniCamp teaches the children, as well as the volunteer counselors, to break down the social and racial barriers they confront everyday and we strive to "Inspire Today's UniCamp Camper to be Tomorrow's Student Volunteer."

The RFAA invites you to join our volunteer program as an RFAA Saturday Business Academy tutor/mentor, a College-Ready Charter High School in South Los Angeles.

You will provide one-to-one mentorship, educational preparation and entrepreneurial development to a ninth grade student. Approximately 30 traditionally disadvantaged and underserved students are enrolled in the program and our goal is to support College-Ready High School's mission to establish a 100 percent college admission rate ()

We have one pilot program left for this summer, which is geared towards preparing College Ready 9th grade students for the academic challenges that they will face in their second year of high school. The main focus of the pilot will be teaching them the skills they will need to be successful in Geometry and Algebra. These essays are sought in preparation for SEARAC's gala celebration on September 17, 2005, to mark two important events:

2. The 25th Anniversary of the Refugee Act of 1980, which set the stage for continuing U.S. leadership in refugee protection and assistance.

It does not define places and spaces as simplistic notions of the local and the international, the centre and the periphery.

Manzanar Internship Guidelines

1. Manzanar volunteer positions require 32 hours per week, usually four 8-hour days for either one semester (15 weeks) or summer vacation (12 weeks). Manzanar National Historic Site is located along Hwy. 395 between the towns of Lone Pine and Independence, CA, in the southern Owens Valley. The 814-acre site rests just east of Mount Williamson (14,375 feet), the second highest peak in the Sierra Nevada range. Temperatures range from –0 degrees F. in winter to over 100 degrees F. in summer. Extreme wind and dust storms are common. Limited groceries, gas, school, and churches are available in Independence, Lone Pine, and Big Pine, CA. Limited medical care is available in Lone Pine. Major shopping and other amenities are located in Bishop, CA, (40 miles north) and Ridgecrest, CA, (90 miles south).

2. The National Park Service provides a simple, furnished one bedroom apartment in Independence, California. Utilities, except for telephone and television, are paid by the National Park Service. A volunteer uniform and supervision are also provided.

3. The CSUF Asian American Studies Program will provide $1,000 stipend for Manzanar interns, which includes travel expenses to and from Manzanar Historical Site.

4. Intern will be supervised by Manzanar NHS Chief of Interpretation Alisa Lynch. Up to 6-units of ASAM 495 is available.

5. Intern duties at Manzanar include providing visitor services at the Manzanar NHS Interpretive Center, providing guided walks/talks, writing text for site publications, transcribing oral history interviews, researching historic documents and compiling data. Clerical duties will not exceed 20% of the intern’s workload. Specific projects will be negotiated to best meet the interests of the intern and the needs of the National Park Service.

6. This internship is open to students at all college grade levels.

7. Renewal at a later date is an option if both the student and the NPS have the time, funding and desire to continue the internship. Manzanar NHS would welcome ongoing internships and we find this a mutually beneficial opportunity for the NPS, CSUF and its students.

Join us April 21 in support of MANAA, the MEDIA ACTION NETWORK FOR ASIAN AMERICANS (www.manaa.org), an organization solely dedicated to monitoring all facets of the media – television, motion pictures, print, advertising, radio, etc. – and advocating balanced, sensitive and positive portrayals of Asian Americans. The all-volunteer, non-profit group was formed in April of 1992 to address the negative stereotypes long perpetuated by the media which detrimentally affects all Asian Americans, hurting not only their self-image, but how non-Asians treat them.
Our April event is co-presented by Visual Communications, an APA media arts center that seeks to make the arts accessible to all communities in the Greater LA area.

We'll converge on The Mountain Bar in Los Angeles Chinatown (themountainbar.com). An eclectic team of artists completely refurbished the former home of Chinatown's oldest restaurant, the General Lee. On the surface, its striking red paint job, cascading ceilings and feng shui design feel vintage Hill Street. Deeper inspection reveals artistic modern touches like color-clustered, triangular floor tiles, propeller-like paper lamp constellations and textured walls that appear to be melting. Locals and adventurous Eastsiders situate themselves under the custom-carved bar's translucent shelves or lounge on leather benches positioned around the room's perimeter.

Join us April 21 in support of MANAA, the MEDIA ACTION NETWORK FOR ASIAN AMERICANS (www.manaa.org), an organization solely dedicated to monitoring all facets of the media – television, motion pictures, print, advertising, radio, etc. – and advocating balanced, sensitive and positive portrayals of Asian Americans. The all-volunteer, non-profit group was formed in April of 1992 to address the negative stereotypes long perpetuated by the media which detrimentally affects all Asian Americans, hurting not only their self-image, but how non-Asians treat them.

Our April event is co-presented by Visual Communications, an APA media arts center that seeks to make the arts accessible to all communities in the Greater LA area.

We'll converge on The Mountain Bar in Los Angeles Chinatown (themountainbar.com). An eclectic team of artists completely refurbished the former home of Chinatown's oldest restaurant, the General Lee. On the surface, its striking red paint job, cascading ceilings and feng shui design feel vintage Hill Street. Deeper inspection reveals artistic modern touches like color-clustered, triangular floor tiles, propeller-like paper lamp constellations and textured walls that appear to be melting. Conceived by the Association’s volunteer leadership, the Academy seeks to develop a pool of informed UCLA volunteers who are educated about the priorities and programs of the Alumni Association and University and are prepared to take the next steps in their volunteer involvement.

4) Run/Walk for APWC on April 10, 2005 at Griffith Park

On Sunday, April 10, 2005 the Los Angeles Mayor's Office and the City Attorney's Office are sponsoring a 5k-run/walk "Run For Victims' Rights" event at Griffith Park followed by a victims' rights fair to commemorate National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

This event is unique in that the City will provide the infrastructure for the run/walk and will allow victim advocacy organizations/service providers from throughout the City and County to make this into a fundraising event for their organization. Each participating non-profit will be responsible for recruiting their race participants and will keep 100% of the money they
receive through fundraising.

APWC has signed up as one of participating agencies. Enclosed please find the registration form for this event. So, please invite your friends to sign up this race directly via APWC. Then, they can ask their friends to donate toward their run/walk. The donation will be payable to APWC directly. Top 3 faster runners and Top 3 agencies who raised more fund will be awarded by
the City.

5) AAJA-LA Workshop

The Los Angeles chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA-L.A.) will hold a free workshop at Orange County Asian and Pacific Community Alliance (OCAPICA) from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 26. The workshop, held in conjunction with OCAPICA, will help APA community nonprofits improve their public relations skills by learning how media discover, choose and report news stories. The workshop also will help members of the media learn about needs of the community and help build positive and productive relationships. We are holding a VERY important volunteer training this weekend Saturday
March 12, 2005. This is the LAST chance to get trained to work directly at
the CAST shelter and get an orientation about CAST. This training is
completely dedicated to PbP and its volunteers! WE NEED RSVP's ASAP TO MEET
THE MINIMUM TO KEEP THE TRAINING.

I attended CAST training in the beginning of the year and it was a very
educational and worthwhile experience. This is a great opportunity to get
to know Kay Buck, Executive Director of CAST, and her wonderful staff and
get indepth training on the topic of human slavery and trafficking.

The "Silk Road to the Future" trip to China will be taking place this year on July 20 - 26th. This is the 5th year in which UCLA has participated in this amazing trip where students, staff and faculty from UCLA and other UC schools meet their Chinese counterparts in China to develop friendships and participate in cultural exchange. Travelers visit historic sites such Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. 4) Tsunami Relief Show - Feb. 27 in Little Tokyo

In light of the Indian Ocean Tsunami disaster, local community artists and the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center (JACCC) are collaborating to produce a rock concert on Sunday, February 27th, 2005, to raise relief funds for victims. The event will last from 12:00pm to 6:00pm in the afternoon in the JACCC plaza located in Little Tokyo of Downtown Los Angeles on S. San Pedro St. between 2nd & 3rd.

Local bands will be performing at this concert including Zoo Hero, Random Ninjas, Elistate, Kiyoshi Graves, Envee, and Things Go Awry.

Participants are encouraged to donate what they can, but the suggested donation is $10 dollars. For every $10 you donate, you will receive a raffle ticket, and a grand prize will be raffled off at the end of the concert. Proceeds will go to American Red Cross for the Tsunami relief effort. Enjoy the music of talented local musicians on a lovely afternoon in Little Tokyo for a good cause.

Staff Attorney - Voting RightsPosted February 16, 2005Job Summary:
For over two decades, Asian Pacific American Legal Center has engaged in advocacy, community education and poll monitoring to secure the voting rights of Asian Pacific Americans guaranteed by law. In particular, the federal Voting Rights Act (VRA) protects racial and language minorities against discrimination in order to ensure their full and meaningful participation in the voting and electoral process. In addition, the federal Help America Vote Act (HAVA) and many state and local laws provide additional protections against election irregularities. The Staff Attorney would be responsible for:

Responsibilities:
· Develop vision for effective advocacy on and engagement by Asian Pacific Americans in the electoral process;
· Monitor and advocate for voting rights access at the local, state and federal levels;
· Oversee poll monitoring efforts and other voter engagement activities in Southern California, during major elections;
· Train APA community-based organizations in Southern California and other targeted regions in California on the bilingual assistance provisions of the Voting Rights Act;
· Work with the National Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium and local and state coalitions to promote access to and participation in elections; and
· Potential supervision of staff in the voting rights project.

Qualifications:
· Minimum one year voting rights experience. Knowledge of voting rights laws and policies.
· Strong oral communication and writing skills; experience working collaboratively.
· Familiarity with Asian Pacific American community
· Law degree and member of California State Bar; strong oral communication and writing skills; experience working collaboratively.
· Driver’s license, proof of liability insurance and access to a vehicle.
· Willingness to travel.
· Demonstrated policy advocacy experience highly desirable
· Demonstrated ability to take initiative and be creative preferred
· Prior supervisory experience including experience with volunteer recruitment and coordination preferred demonstrated ability to take initiative and be creative.

Compensation:
Starting salary $41,000 per year depending on experience. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, retirement, and parking.

*CAM has been invited to participate in this parade. Volunteers are needed to march in the parade, under the CAM banner. All participating volunteers will be given an official Lantern Festival t-shirt to keep and wear for the parade. RSVP by Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005.

Hey Friends,

I spent 6 weeks in Alberta, Canada shooting the Hallmark movie "The Magic of Ordinary Days." It's a world war II love story between Keri Russell (Felicity) and Skeet Ulrich's (Scream) characters with a side arc on the Japanese Internment camps. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor anti-Japanese sentiments arose and Japanese Americans living on the coasts were taken from their homes and lives and moved inland to internment camps to work. I play Rose Umahara. Mare Winningham (Clubhouse, Helen Keller) is also great in it. Directed by Brent Shields. I invite you to watch!
